Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA),situated at the European Southern Observatory's (ESO's) Paranal Observatory in Chile. VISTA is located on a mountain top adjacent to Cerro Paranal and is the largest telescope in the world designed to survey the sky in near-infrared light. The high altitude and arid conditions of the Atacama Desert provide the perfect conditions for astronomical observations, delivering cloud-free skies and very low light pollution for the vast majority of the year. This allows for spectacular views of the Milky Way overhead,as shown here. | |
