Colourful Jurassic and Cretaceous limestone layers in the gorge of the Breggia river in Ticino,southern Switzerland. The sedimentary layers represent cyclic climate changes during the Jurassic period. Originally deposited horizontally,they were uplifted and tilted during the formation of the Alps. The layers seem to bend below the water. However,this is only an effect of light refraction at the water surface. | |
