Project Strato-Lab launch,1961. Manned balloon used in Project Strato-Lab prior to its launch from the flight deck of a US Navy aircraft carrier. This launch is for one of the low-altitude flights manned by US Navy officers Commander Malcolm D. Ross and Lieutenant Commander Victor A. Prather. This launch took place from the aircraft carrier USS Antietam (CV-36). A later launch from the same aircraft carrier on 4 May 1961 set an altitude record for manned balloon flight of 34,668 metres and successfully tested the Navy Mark IV pressure suit used in early spaceflights. However,Prather drowned during the recovery phase of the later balloon flight. Photographed in April 1961.
