This phenomenon occurs when two slightly flexible glass lenses that have been placed together with a small piece of paper inserted between their edges to produce an uneven pressure are exposed to white light. The partial reflections on the adjacent surfaces interfere with one another and produce Newton's rings. The asymmetric stress generates two sets of rings. The low contrast phenomenon was amplified to clearly show the different colours generated by the constructive and destructive interference of the white light. | |
