Spiral galaxy NGC 3596, composite radio-optical image. This image combines hydrogen-alpha emission (red), visible light in the R-band (white), and neutral hydrogen 21-centimetre gas emission (blue) from the Very Large Array (VLA). This combination shows the enormous shroud of gas surrounding this galaxy. Mature stars are white, new stars are forming in nebulae (red), while the gas and dust for future stars glows in blue. This galaxy is 50 million light years distant, in the constellation of Leo. The optical data is from the Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope (CFHT). The VLA observations were made in 1999. | |
