The Windscale Piles with their two chimneys, a pair of graphite-moderated nuclear reactors, were used for the production of plutonium for the British H bomb programme. Pile 1 ( the nearest on the right) caught fire in 1957 releasing a cloud of radioactive fallout, the worst nuclear accident in British history. Also in view: Windscale Advanced Gas Cooled Reactor (WAGR), and Calder Hall cooling towers. Calder Hall was the world's first industrial scale nuclear power station. The cooling towers were demolished in 2007 and both chimneys are now partially demolished. Photographed at night, Sellafield, Cumbria, UK, 1998. | |
