Illustration of FU Orionis, a variable star in the constellation of Orion (The Hunter). FU Orionis has been slowly fading since an initial increase in visual magnitude in 1937. The star is shown with the disk of material that surrounds it. Researchers found that it has dimmed by about 13 per cent at short infrared wavelengths from 2004 to 2016. This illustration represents the fainter disk inferred from 2016 data which was collected with the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA). | |
