A buffalo pound, Canada, c1819-1822 (1823). From Narrative of a Journey to the Shores of the Polar Sea in the Years 1819-22 by John Franklin (1786-1847). Franklin commanded an expedition to the Canadian Arctic in 1819-1822. The expedition was a disaster, costing the lives of 11 of the 20 participants, mostly due to starvation. In 1845 he led an expedition to attempt to locate the Northwest Passage. None of its members returned alive. | |
