Messier 30 is a ball of stars (globular cluster) in the southern constellation Capricornus, and is located 27,000 light-years from Earth. Messier 30 is estimated to be 12.9 billion years old and is around 93 light-years across. Charles Messier, the 18th century French astronomer, catalogued over 100 galaxies and clusters. Through the telescopes available at the time, comets, nebulae, globular clusters and galaxies appeared just as faint, diffuse blobs.
