Gamma-ray sky, FGST Large Area Telescope image. This view of the gamma-ray sky was constructed from one year of Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (FGST) LAT (Large Area Telescope) observations. The map shows the rate at which the LAT detects gamma rays with energies above 300 million electron volts (about 120 million times the energy of visible light) from different sky directions. The band across centre is the Milky Way, our galaxy seen from the inside. Brighter colours equal higher rates of gamma ray emission. Image published in 2017. | |
