GPS III global positioning satellite in orbit, illustration. The USA's Global Positioning System (GPS) is a system of satellites placed in Earth orbit to transmit signals that allow worldwide navigational capabilities. The GPS network was established from 1973 to full operational capacity in 1993, with 24 satellites in orbit. The initial satellites are periodically replaced. The GPS III satellites are the third-generation GPS satellites, incorporating new signals and broadcasting at higher power levels. The first GPS III satellite was launched on 23 December 2018. This is the first of an initial 10 GPS III satellites (GPS Block IIIA) that are to be launched between 2018 and 2023. The GPS system is owned by the US government and operated by the United States Air Force.
