Robert Browning (1812-1889), writer, playwright and one of the foremost English poets of the Victorian era. His work is celebrated for its richness of texture, sustained imaginative power, and a warm interest in humanity. In studying the psychological portraiture of the individual man and woman, he sought to understand human nature, religion and the dramatic changes in modern society. He developed new styles of poetry writing, creating and mastering his techniques of the dramatic monologue. Considered by some a controversial figure, he was regarded by many as a philosopher-poet whose writing had made contributions to Victorian social and political discourse. In the year he died his voice was recorded on an Edison cylinder reciting one of his poems, making him the first recorded poet. He is buried in Poet's Corner, Westminster Abbey. | |
