RoboSimian and Surrogate (Surge) are robots that were designed and built at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, USA. RoboSimian will compete in the 2015 DARPA Robotics Challenge Finals. The DARPA Robotics Challenge (DRC) was a prize competition held from 2012 to 2015, that aimed to develop semi-autonomous ground robots that could do complex tasks in dangerous, degraded, human-engineered environments. The DARPA Robotics Challenge calls upon competitor bots to complete a series of tasks, including driving a vehicle, using tools and climbing a ladder. To get the robot in shape for the contest, researchers at JPL are collaborating with partners at University of California, Santa Barbara, and California Institute of Technology. Surrogate received support from the Defense Threat Reduction Agency and the Robotics Collaborative Technology Alliance. The California Institute of Technology manages JPL for NASA. | |
