Flow chart displaying illustrated steps of the inflammatory cascade and where in this process corticosteroid treatment inhibits an allergic response. The inflammatory cascade begins with the enzyme phospholipase A2 becoming activated in response to inflammatory mediators and triggering the release of arachidonic acid. The enzymes cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase metabolize the arachidonic acid and produce prostaglandins and leukotrienes (which are also inflammatory mediators). Prostaglandins and leukotrienes cause symptoms of redness, warmth, pain and swelling. When corticosteroids are used as a treatment for inflammatory reactions, they are able to block phospholipase A2 from becoming activated, which prevents symptoms of redness, warmth, pain and swelling. | |
