Scanning electron micrograph of halite, commonly known as rock salt, a type of salt and the mineral form of sodium chloride (NaCl). Rock salt is used on roads to clear snow and ice. Rock salt lowers the physical freezing point of the moisture on the road surface, which stops ice forming and causes existing ice or snow to melt. Halite forms isometric crystals. The mineral is typically colourless or white. Halite occurs in vast beds of sedimentary evaporate minerals that result from the drying up of enclosed lakes, playas, and seas.
