When 0.001M solution of potassium permanganate(VII) (KMnO4) is added to a strong alkali (6M sodium hydroxide, NaOH), the solution initially has purple colour of permanganate(VII) ion ((MnO4)+), Photo 1. After several minutes the colour changes to blue due to reduction of permanganate(VII) ion ((MnO4)+) to hypomanganate(V) ion (or manganate(V), (MnO4)3+), this Photo 2.
