Excess cholesterol can accumulate on arterial walls and form hard plaques. Abnormally high levels of insulin in the blood, termed hyperinsulemia, also cause damage. One effect is insulin resistance in fat cells and muscle cells. Hyperinsulemia can create insulin resistance in fat and muscle cells and damage the liver's and the intestines' ability to metabolize fat. Researchers have discovered that excessive insulin appears to alter the mechanics of blood vessel walls, allowing triglycerides and cholesterol to build up in them. Plaques form over time, creating blockages in the bloodstream that can lead to angina, heart attack, or stroke. | |
