Ammonium dichromate volcano. A small mound (2.4 g) of ammonium dichromate ((NH4)2Cr2O7) is placed in a watch glass. A fuse (rolled paper soaked in alcohol) is placed in the mound and ignited. Ammonium dichromate decomposes, it gives off orange sparks and throws green chromium(III) oxide, producing an effect resembling a volcano. The reaction is (NH4)2Cr2O7 -> Cr2O3 + N2 + H2O. The resulting chromium(III) oxide is fluffier than the original ammonium dichromate, giving the appearance that the amount of material increases in the reaction. | |
