Sandhill Crane (Grus canadensis) migration in Nebraska along the Platte River is extraordinary. More than half-a-million birds collect in fallowed fields along the Platte River in March. At dawn and dusk the birds collect onto sand bars in the river for protection while roosting. During the day the birds disperse into adjacent corn fields to feed on the waste from the previous growing season. This migration is as old as the species-perhaps millions of years. 2018. | |
