These trees at Siletz Bay near Lincoln City on the Oregon coast were killed by a massive subduction earthquake that, according to Japanese records, occurred January 26, 1700 at 9 pm PST. It was caused by a sudden slip of the Juan de Fuca plate about 70 miles offshore and produced a 33 ft tsunami. Studies of this and other ghost forests as well as core samples suggest a similar event could occur in the Northwest at any time. | |
