Rosette Nebula, optical image. This nebula (also known as Caldwell 49) is located around 5000 light years from Earth, in the constellation of Monoceros. The open cluster at centre, NGC 2244, is closely associated with the nebulosity, the stars of the cluster having been formed from the nebula. Stellar winds from these hot young stars has cleared out the surrounding cavity (50 light years across). Photographed in 2016 from the Cumeada Observatory in the Dark Sky Alqueva Reserve, Portugal. | |
