Earth's wind patterns. Illustration of the patterns of movement of air in the Earth's atmosphere. The general circulation of the atmosphere transports heat away from equatorial regions towards the poles, and returns cooler air to the tropics. Atmospheric circulation in each hemisphere consists of three cells: the Hadley, Ferrel and polar cells. Between the cells, high-speed wind fields, known as 'jets' (orange), are associated with large temperature differences at subtropical and polar latitudes. Other large-scale wind phenomena (blue arrows) include the Easterlies and Westerlies, and the South-East Trade Winds and the North-East Trade Winds. The ITCZ is the Intertropical Convergence Zone, an area of calm along the equator, also known as the doldrums.
