Material orbiting close to a black hole, illustration. Research using ESO's GRAVITY instrument has provided further evidence that a supermassive black hole it located at the centre of the Milky Way. Clumps of gas swirl around a four-million-solar-mass black hole at about 30 percent of the speed of light. This is the first time material has been observed orbiting close to the point of no return, and the most detailed observations yet of material orbiting this close to a black hole. The GRAVITY instrument is part of the Very Large Telescope (VLT). Image published in 2018. | |
