Colour enhanced transmission electron micrograph (TEM) depicting a number of Gram-negative Elizabethkingia anophelis bacteria, which had been isolated from specimens obtained during the 2016 outbreak in Wisconsin. Elizabethkingia anophelis bacteria is commonly found worldwide in soil, river water, reservoirs and other places. However, it rarely makes people sick. Elizabethkingia has mostly caused meningitis in infants or bloodstream and respiratory infections in people with weakened immune systems. In 2016, there's been an outbreak reported in Wisconsin with cases in Michigan and Illinois. Previous outbreaks have been associated with healthcare settings. | |
