American hornbeam with fruit, Carpinus caroliniana. Generally a small to medium size understory tree of rich, moist woodlands, its smooth grey back and fluted trunk has given it the alternate nakes of blue beech and musclewood. Common throughout most of the eastern half of the US west to east TX. Photo: McCurtain Co., OK. | |
