Cervical artery dissection. Coloured frontal magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) image of the arteries in the chest, neck and head of a 48-year-old woman with a right cervical artery dissection. This condition is a tear in the internal lining of one of the neck's cervical arteries. It has resulted in a blockage of the artery, reducing the blood flow up the right side of the neck. This is seen at centre left where only one blood vessel is highlighted compared to the other side of the neck. This arterial insufficiency is compensated for here by blood flow in the rest of the arteries, including the circle of Willis at the base of the brain (top centre). The circle of Willis allows blood flowing up one side of the neck to cross over and reach the other side of the brain.
