Cellulitis following deep vein thrombosis. Cellulitis on the leg of a 43-year-old woman next to an area of dermatitis (skin inflammation) arising from complications from a deep vein thrombosis (DVT). As a result of the DVT, the patient developed post-phlebitic syndrome (also called post-thrombotic syndrome and venous stress disorder). Cellulitis is a bacterial infection of the skin and its underlying tissues. It is often due to infection by Streptococcus bacteria. Cellulitis may cause a fever and chills, and, if left untreated, may result in septicaemia (blood poisoning) or gangrene. It is usually treated with penicillin or erythromycin antibiotic drugs.
