The zygote is the cell resulting from the fertilization. It contains 46 chromosomes, half of which are contributed by an ovum and the other half by a sperm cell. Some 24 hours after fertilization, the zygote divides into two identical cells, which will continue to divide for 3 to 4 days before migrating towards the uterine cavity. | |
