Iron (III) oxide in hydrochloric acid. Solid rusty-red iron (III) oxide (FeO3) reacts slowly with concentrated (12 M) hydrochloric acid (HCl) at room temperature, producing orange-red solution of iron (III) chloride (FeCl3) and water: Fe2O3 + HCl -> FeCl3 + H2O. This photo was taken after solid iron (III) oxide has been in the acid for several hours while being periodically shaken. | |
