The Mexican Axolotl, Ambystoma mexicanum, is a critically endangered species from a wetland in Mexico that boarders Mexico City. While wild Axolotls are in trouble, thousands of them are produced in labs each year as pets and as research animals. This particular individual has a genetic mutation that produces the spotted pattern on a pink background. It was photographed at the San Antonio Zoo in 2014. | |
