Paiche, Piraruca , or Arapaima, Arapaima gigas, are large freshwater fish inhabiting the rivers of South America east of the Andes, including the Amazon and its tributaries. They thrive in the most turbid rivers that South America has to offer. These fish grow to enormous proportions, exceeding six and a half feet (2 meters) with older claims of fish growing even larger. An adult can exceed 200 pounds (more than 100kg). This individual photographed in Goiais, Brazil, 2014. | |
