Worker is unloading flat bed truck with low-level nuclear waste container. The Radioactive Waste Management Complex (RWMC), a 144 acre waste storage area for low-level radioactive solid wastes, is divided into a transuranic storage area (TSA) and a subsurface disposal area (SDA). The TSA is designed for the interim storage of transuranic wastes. The waste is packed in specially constructed boxes or drums and is stacked on a sloped asphalt pad. An air support building covers the area, but after stacking is complete the air support building is removed and the area is covered with plywood, nylon-reinforced polyvinyl, and two to three feet of earth. It is planned to retrieve the TSA waste and transfer it to an available federal repository. The SDA is an 88 acre, fence-enclosed portion of the RWMC. Various waste materials contaminated with non-transuranic radioisotopes are placed in pits and trenches in the SDA and buried in the soil. Idaho National | |
