Lammot du Pont (1831-1884), US chemist. Du Pont studied chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania and then entered the family business (the DuPont Company). He worked on explosives, served in the US Civil War, and died in a nitroglycerin explosion aged 52. This engraving of an 1865 photograph is by Samuel Sartain (1830-1906). | |
