Pressure. Illustration showing a woman wearing shoes with stiletto heels, and an elephant. The elephant exerts a larger force on the ground because it is heavier, but the woman in stiletto heels exerts a larger pressure. This is because most of the woman's weight is acting on the tiny area of the heels, whereas the elephant's weight is spread across four feet, and each foot has a large surface area. Pressure is calculated by dividing the force (or weight) by the area over which it is acting.
