| Laser Ranging Facility targets Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. Goddard's Laser Ranging Facility directs a laser toward the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) on International Observe the Moon Night in 2010. The LRO was launched on 18 June 2009 and entered lunar orbit on 23 June 2009. It has been using a range of sensors to map the Moon. The laser ranging from Earth-based facilities is used to accurately track the orbit of the LRO around the Moon, enabling extremely accurate mapping of the Moon. Photographed on 18 September 2010. | |
