Albireo is the proper name of double star Beta Cygni, in the Cygnus constellation. It is easily visible to the naked eye as a single star, but even an amateur telescope reveals a second fainter component. The brighter yellow star makes a striking colour contrast with its fainter blue companion. Actually, the main component is a close double stellar system itself. The system is located 420 light-years from Earth. This image was created from photographic material taken with the 1.22-metre Oschin Telescope at Mount Palomar Observatory, forming part of the Digitized Sky Survey 2. | |
