Chance and Theorell, US and Swedish biochemists. US biochemist and biophysicist Britton Chance (left, 1913-2010) and Swedish biochemist Axel Hugo Theodor Theorell (right, 1903-1982) working in a laboratory. Chance worked at the University of Pennsylvania on enzyme structures, as well as analytical techniques such as phosphorus NMR, optical spectroscopy, and fluorometry. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1952, and elected a Foreign Member of the Royal Society in 1981. Theorell worked on enzyme research at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1955 for discovering the oxidation enzyme and its effects. He was elected a Foreign Member of the Royal Society in 1959.
