Illustration of anomalocaris. This animal, whose name means 'abnormal shrimp', was an ancient marine arthropod, a group that includes modern-day insects, crustaceans and arachnids. It was probably a predator, about 1m long, which was a giant for its time period. It may have fed on trilobites. It lived in the seas of the Cambrian period, 515 million years ago. | |
