| Earth-moving machine. 16th-century illustration of men operating an earth-moving machine to build a brick-lined embankment. This illustration is from 'Le Diverse et Artificiose Machine' (1588) by Italian engineer Agostino Ramelli (1531-c.1610). This work contains nearly 200 designs for devices, many of them water-raising machines including water wheels, pumps, mills, fountains, and wells. This machine is an example of the use of a chain of buckets. | |
