Milky Way and zodiacal light over the Himalayas. Zodiacal light (far left) and the Milky Way (arc at centre) in the night sky after sunset over a Himalayan landscape, seen from Kala Pattar (5550 metres) in Sagarmatha National Park, Nepal. Mount Everest (8848 metres), Nuptse (7861 metres) and Khumbu Glacier are seen under the clouds at far right. At centre, Pumori (7161 metres) is the closest peak. Green and yellow airglow is seen on the horizon. Zodiacal light is sunlight reflected from dust particles orbiting in the plane of the solar system. From Earth it is seen as a cone of light along the ecliptic, the orbital path of the Sun, Moon and planets in the sky. The Milky Way is our galaxy seen from the inside, forming a band of stars and nebulae stretching across the sky. Airglow is a phenomenon where a planetary atmosphere emits a faint glow when atoms are excited by sunlight. Photographed on 4 December 2015. See C040/4313 for the circular panoramic version. | |
