Milky Way over Yaqing Monastery, Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan, China. At 4000 metres above sea level, this location provides superb clear skies. Shown here is the central bulge of the Milky Way (upper right), above the lights of the monastery and the surrounding buildings. The Milky Way is our galaxy seen from the inside, forming a band of stars and nebulae stretching across the sky. This monastery is associated with Tibetan Buddhism. With more than 30, 000 Sangha members, it is the largest concentration of nuns and monks in the world. Photographed on 9 September 2015. | |
