Volcanic eruption effects. Illustration of some of the effects of a volcanic eruption: acid rain (lower right), reduced sunlight (upper right), and lava flows and pyroclastic flows (arrow, far left). At upper right, sunlight is reflected by the clouds of ash ejected from the volcano. Large volcanic eruptions, or frequent eruptions, can significantly cool the global climate. Sulphur-containing gases erupted from the volcano (arrows) are carried on the wind and droplets of sulphuric acid are formed, producing acid rain (lower right). Short-term effects near a volcano from an eruption include the killing off of plant and animal life under blankets of ash.
