2060 Chiron and Saturn. Illustration of the minor planet 2060 Chiron (also known as 95P/Chiron). This rocky and icy object orbits between Saturn (upper centre) and Uranus. It is around 206 kilometres in diameter. Discovered in 1977, it is classified as a centaur, a small astronomical body that orbits between the asteroid belt and the Kuiper belt. Chiron exhibits cometary behaviour (outgassing seen here), and is also classified as a comet as well as a minor planet. | |
