Zinc chloride battery. Cut-away illustration showing the typical structure of a zinc chloride battery. Inside the battery casing (red and white) is the zinc anode (outer grey line), followed by a layer of electrolyte separator. Inside this is the manganese dioxide cathode mix, surrounding a carbon rod electrode. Connecting the battery to a circuit initiates chemical reactions at the anode and cathode that result in electrons flowing through the carbon electrode, from positive terminal (top) to negative terminal (bottom). The reactions cause the zinc to dissolve, when the zinc is used the battery is flat
