Three-section neutron guide. Neutrons are fundamental particles found in atomic nuclei. Typically emitted by a suitable radioactive source or nuclear reactor, neutrons have applications in various areas of physics, particularly the field known as neutron optics. Neutron guides are constructed from precisely engineered layers of metals that reflect the neutrons, which are acting as waves. This curved neutron guide is used to filter neutron beams from fast neutrons and gamma rays, and to polarize thermal and cold neutrons. Examples of neutron optics include neutron spectrometry, neutron diffraction, neutron scattering, and neutron tomography. | |
