Abraham Lincoln (1809-65), American statesman, lawyer and 16th President of the United States. Lincoln was born in Kentucky and, though largely self-educated, became a lawyer in Illinois. His election as President in 1860 helped trigger the secession of the Confederate southern 'slave states' from the Union, in turn prompting the US Civil War. Lincoln's gift for oratory is best known from his Gettysburg Address, an endorsement of nationalism, republicanism, equality, liberty and democracy. Lincoln was re-elected in 1864 and the Civil War ended on 9 April 1865. Just five days later Lincoln was shot by a Confederate sympathiser called John Wilkes Booth, and died the following day. | |
