Close-up of an F-1 engine from the first stage (S-IC) of NASA's Saturn V rocket. Five of these engines, propelled by RP-1 fuel, a highly refined form of kerosene, and liquid oxygen, were fitted in each rocket. The Saturn V was the launch vehicle for NASA's Apollo program of manned missions to the Moon, which took place between 1961 and 1975. The Saturn V was one of the most powerful rockets ever made. Fully fuelled, the 110-metre high rocket weighed over 3000 tonnes. The rocket's first stage was used during take-off. The F-1 engines operated for two and a half minutes, during which time they burned 15 tonnes of propellant per second, and took the rocket to a height of 58 kilometres at a speed of about 2, 500 kilometres per second. | |
