Maltoporin membrane transport protein structure. Maltoporin is a trans-membrane protein that allows the sugar maltose to cross the membrane without encountering the hydrophobic interior of the lipid bilayer. This figure shows sucrose within the barrel-shaped protein. The gate through the membrane is specific enough that maltose can pass through easily, but sucrose cannot. A different membrane protein is required to transport sucrose. A transparency has been applied to several amino acid residues that would otherwise block the sucrose molecule from view.
