Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of ovarian cancer cells. The cause of ovarian cancer is unknown, although risk factors include a family history of the disease and the use of infertility drugs or hormone replacement therapy. Taking the contraceptive pill and having children both reduce the risk of ovarian cancer. Symptoms include abdominal pain and bloating, and irregular periods. Treatment is with surgery, to remove both ovaries and the womb, often combined with chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Magnification: x260 when printed at 10 centimetres tall. | |
