Viral infection. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of tissue infected with adenovirus particles (green) and parvovirus particles (red). Adenoviruses are the largest viruses not to have a protein coat covering their capsid. They commonly cause infections of the upper respiratory tract and eyes. Parvoviridae viruses include the smallest known viruses and some of the most environmentally resistant. Many virus particles belonging to this family have been associated with outbreaks of gastroenteritis, although a causative role in human disease cannot always be established.
